TERE BIN
The story is set in Hyderabad and begins with the village’s head, Murtasim Shahnawaz Khan on a stroll in the fields to discern the progress of the crops when one of the farmers mournfully informs him of the threats they are agonised with and enlightens him of the rising menace to their fields imposed by a cutthroat rival in the village named, Malik Mukhtar and his vile son, Malik Zubair. Being the village’s premier, Murtasim heeds the whole situation and it quite incenses him. He’s known to be responsible as well as ruthless when it comes to protecting and ensuring his people’s safety. When Malik tries to create problems over a mere land that he desires which is owned by Murtasim, it’s the cue for Murtasim to assert his true dominance. Hence, to instill terror and warn his foes of further barbarity against his people and meddling in the village’s peace, Murtasim barges into Malik’s mansion and threatens to kill his son —thus fueling the red-hot rivalry further.
On the other hand, Meerab Waqas Ahmad., Meerab Anwar Khan by birth, is her father’s princess who is a renowned lawyer in Karachi. She’s an ambitious and beautiful young girl who wants to pursue higher studies and aspires to become a rightful lawyer like her father, Waqas. It’s shown that her entire world revolves around her parents and she believes in them the most. Her strong and confident personality makes her stand against social injustices around her, and she never stays back to voice her debate over the disservices of society over innocents. She’s incredibly coddled by her family and her college friends which grips her with a sense of pride and self-worth.
In Hyderabad, Murtasim’s mother, Salma Begum, is considered the “Khaanum” and is respected among the whole village. Being extremely venerated with her regal aura that graces the grand mansion of the Khans, she’s customed to heed the problems and sufferings of the people calmly and unriddle suitable solutions for their miseries. It is also shown that Murtasim has a younger cousin, Haya, Murtasim’s late paternal aunt’s daughter, who is deeply in love with him to the extent of an unhealthy obsession as she earnestly dreams to marry him. She roams like a delusional lover in his room and touches his walled pictures, claiming that she’s the one who would own him in the end no matter how much he runs away from her and dismisses her advances. It turns out that Murtasim’s half-aware of the madly fascinated upswings of Haya regarding him, but he deems her as his younger sister and continues to refuse her in every way.
Waqas’s good friend and Murtasim’s paternal Uncle, Anwar Khan, is clued in on Meerab’s wish to study law and he promptly informs his sister-in-law Salma Begum of Waqas’s inclination to let Meerab fulfill her ambition. Salma Begum is a woman of a conservative and backward mentality. She doesn’t deem that the women of her family should be tolerated to roam in circles of courts but rather be reserved in a womanly chore to which she’s entitled. She urges Anwar to travel to Karachi along with Murtasim to make Waqas understand and reiterate that she’s the one who makes decisions in their family, after her son and the crowned kingpin, Murtasim Shahnawaz Khan himself.
It’s Meerab’s birthday shortly and her college friends, Saba and Rohail, insist on having a party. Intending to romantically propose to Meerab on her birthday itself, Rohail volunteers to throw the party and after many avowals by her friends, Meerab agrees, unaware of what Rohail has planned,. On the way to Karachi with Anwar, Murtasim stops his car among the throng of spectators surrounding the public street and goes over to investigate the chaos only to see Meerab manhandling a man who she claims to be abusive with his wife, and her female servant. Angered that Meerab is supposedly flouting their family’s vanity, he roughly drags her away from the scene.
Meerab tries hard to make sure her father doesn’t view her as culpable and laments over how Murtasim and Anwar dragged her insensately. She questions their constant involvement in their house and asserts that they don’t hold any power over her. Waqas makes her leave without listening to her which upsets Meerab. Anwar warns Waqas that he wouldn’t condone their family’s dignity getting bedraggled on the streets.
To resolve the outcome of Meerab’s situation, Murtasim relays a suitable suggestion to deal with Meerab, which is to get her married as soon as possible. Waqas instruct Meerab that she must go to Salma Begum’s mansion and apologize to Anwar for what he considers a ‘mistake.’ For her parents’ sake, Meerab travels to Hyderabad and gets off a bumpy road with the family with her outspoken and upright tone. Salma Begum passes the knowledge of the decision she’s made for Meerab’s marriage to Waqas and Anila, urging them to reluctantly agree while not bothering to notify Meerab about the decision yet.
At Meerab’s birthday party, a disgruntled Murtasim uninvitedly arrives and creates a scene with Rohail, who refuses to let Meerab be dragged away against her wishes. On the occasion of Meerab’s birthday, Salma Begum announces the marriage alliance between her son, Murtasim and Meerab. Both people woven in the misalliance don’t take the decision well and quarrel against it. Murtasim claims that Meerab is an insolent and mollycoddled girl that he dislikes the guts of, thus refusing to marry her. Meerab has a similar opinion as well and wishes to be kept away from an unruly guy like Murtasim. Despite their personality clashes and blatant refusal, everyone urges them to agree as it’s only better in the eyes of Salma Begum. Meanwhile, Haya is devastated by the thought of seeing the object of her infatuation being married off to someone else and begins to despise Meerab with full intensity. Mariam , Murtasim’s younger sister, tries to make Haya discern the consequences of her far-fetched devotion.
Meerab’s hatred towards Murtasim continues to flourish as after a lot of entreaties, her parents refuse to change their decisions and try to make her adjust to the fact that Murtasim is the man of dreams and will keep her happy. She doesn’t stop imploring her father to defy Salma Begum’s decision and take her to her home in Karachi. Meerab is left in disbelief as a family secret from the past resurfaces before her. It is revealed that Muratism’s uncle Anwar is the biological father of Meerab who abandoned her after the demise of his wife and Meerab’s mother, Nazia, during childbirth.
To have the baby in the right hands, Shahnawaz Khan and Salma Begun make Waqas and Anila foster Meerab and raise her as the couple both did not have children. Meerab is utterly devastated by the fact that her whole life had been a lie fabricated before her beautifully yet so cruelly. She gets despairingly lonely as Salma Begum sends Waqas and Anila away to Karachi with Meerab left behind. After realizing the rights Anwar has upon her, Meerab agrees to the marriage, much to Murtasim’s surprise who still is adamant about his refusal. But he starts pondering upon finding out that the alliance was set in place since Meerab’s birth as it was his late father, Shahnawaz’s, decision and wish to have Meerab become Murtasim’s wife and “Khaanum”.
After seeing that Meerab’s beginning to soften towards him and pitying the recent tragic revelation of her life, Murtasim agrees to the marriage as well being unaware that Meerab’s planning to marry him solely to make the family repent for everything they did to her. The marriage rituals begin, and Haya in her power tries to disparage Meerab before everyone though Meerub claps back at her after each of her failed tactics. On the day of the marriage, much to everyone’s surprise, Murtasim brings Meerab’s foster parents from Karachi himself just to make her feel better but she refuses to acknowledge them. Amidst the Nikkah, Meerab declines the nuptials and walks away before everyone and it incenses Murtasim and his family. She proposes a contract to her future husband stating that Murtasim can’t ever close upon her and should refrain from making any physical contact with her even after Nikkah, without her consent. Murtasim signs the pact immediately and takes her back to the wedding. Ultimately, they get married to each other.
Murtasim feels drawn towards Meerab soon after their wedding and tries to continuously woo her. Meerab remains adamant to not bridge the gap between her and Murtasim and makes him stick to the contract of non-consummation that they signed. Meerab and Murtasim head to the village where she is kidnapped by Malik Zubair, Murtasim’s sworn enemy. Murtasim manages to save Meerab and goes to face Malik Zubair for trying to play with the honor of his family. Meerab inadvertentantly removes the bullets from Murtasim’s gun and almost gets him killed at the hands of Malik Zubair. Annoyed at her actions in village including questioning his judgements at Panchayat, Murtasim rashly drives back home with Meerab. On the way, they have an accident which leaves Murtasim hospitalized. Maa Begum and Haya verbally attack Meerab blaming her for Murtasim’s predicament.
Meerab confesses that Murtasim put himself forward to save her. Not being able to bear seeing her son suffer and being egged on by Haya, Maa Begam, throws Meerab out of the house. Anwar, aghast at the treatment meted out to his daughter, moves with Meerab to his portion of the house. Murtasim gains consciousness and constantly enquires for Meerab. Haya, to keep the couple apart, spares no efforts in spinning lies about Meerab’s indifference to Murtasim after the accident. Not being able to see her brother crestfallen, Mariam steps-in to tell Murtasim the truth after which he brings Meerab back and warns his mother from ever treating his wife badly again.
Seeing the sacrifices Murtasim is making for her, Meerab begins to soften and is shown to be slowly appreciating his efforts to be her life. Their happiness is short-lived with the arrival of Rohail, Meerab college friend who is madly in love her. While Meerab remains adamant that she has no feelings for Rohail, Murtasim is rattled by the fact that Meerab continues to meet him as a friend. After a series of fights on the matter, Murtasim makes Meerab promise that she won’t meet Rohail again. Meerab angrily agrees to prove her point.
Their non-consummation contract also comes to the attention of the family after Haya finds it. Murtasim defends Meerab on the matter and blames family for forcing the marriage on her. Haya leaves no stone unturned to put Meerab down and she takes the opportunity on one occasion to accompany Murtasim alone to the village. Not trusting Haya’s intentions, Meerab rushes to the village only to find that Haya has orchestrated a situation to make Murtasim come close to her by pretending that she has something in her eye. Meerab is left disheartened and tells Murtasim that the reason she is not able to love him is because he gives her no reason to trust him as he never puts Haya in her place.
In the meantime, to settle his score with Murtasim, Malik Zubair gets into a relationship with Mariam Unaware of his true nature, Mariam falls head-over heels for him. Haya in order to get out of the marriage alliance fixed for her, convinces the guy, Naurez that Mariam is in love with him. Pleasantly surprised and eager to not hurt a girl’s feelings, sends a marriage proposal for Mariam instead, which to both Haya’s and Mariam’s surprise, Murtasim and Maa Begam accept after some thought.
Mariam now confides in Meerab about her affair with Anas. Not wanting Mariam to face the same situation she did, Meerab promises to help Mariam convince Murtasim to call-off the wedding and meet Anas instead. Malik Zubair also uses the fact that Meerab has never seen him before to his advantage and asks for her help in marrying Mariam. Haya, after gleefully witnessing that Malik Zubair and Anas are one and the same, watches as the unaware Meerab tries to reason with Murtasim. Malik Zubair leaves no stone unturned to avoid meeting Murtasim face-to-face and continues to assure Mariam and Meerab in confidence of his honorable intentions.
Finding no concrete evidence of Anas being from a good family, Murtasim angrily asks Meerab to toe the line and let Naurez marry Mariam. One night, Meerab catches Mariam running away with Anas and admonishes her for her actions but later finding no way to convince Murtasim, she helps her elope in the night. Haya films the incident so that she can shame Meerab. Getting Mariam in his custody, Malik Zubair calls Murtasim and tells him the truth. In exchange for his sister, Murtasim is asked to hand over their disputed land to Zubair without contesting ownership in the future. Initially, Murtasim refuses to believe that Meerab helped Mariam runaway, however, Haya’s video proves his worst fears. Disappointed in her actions, he promises to drop her back in Karachi after Mariam returns.
After rescuing Mariam, Murtasim drops Meerab back at her foster parents home in the middle of the night. Meerab, who has now come to love her husband, is deeply grieved that she has hurt him and destroyed his trust in her. However, her ego does not let her admit these feelings to him. Matters are again made worse by Rohail inviting Meerab to meet him at a cafe, with her other mutual friend, Saba. Murtasim witnesses this meeting and believes that this is the end of the road for their relationship as Meerab broke her promise of not meeting Rohail. Fed up of the misunderstandings caused by Rohail, Meerab clearly tells him that she has started to grow fond of Murtasim.
Mariam, who is heartbroken at being jilted in love, agrees to marry on the condition that Meerab is present at the wedding. To keep-up appearances and to make sure that the wedding proceeds without any hiccups, Maa Begum brings Meerab back. Meerab, who is back with the intention of reuniting with Murtasim, is put off by Murtasim’s accusations of her relationship with Rohail and she retorts by questioning his relationship with Haya.
Murtasim’s anger fades when he receives a paper note seemingly from Meerab asking him to meet in their room. He goes to the room anticipating that Meerab will confess her feelings for him only to be hugged by Haya from behind. Meerab witnesses their embrace and is disgusted. Murtasim realizes that the note was set-up by Haya to get close to him and create misunderstandings between him and Meerab. Unable to contain her anger and having confirmed her worst fears, Meerab slaps and spits in Murtasim’s face saying that he deserved having the non-consummation contract as he is a womanizer and is not be trusted.
This altercation sends Murtasim over the edge and makes him drag Meerab across the room, promising that he will show her the actual legal status of the secret contract she made him sign.
In the heat of the moment and overcome by emotions of love, anger and pining, they consensually consummate their marriage. Both are shown to regret their actions. Murtasim regrets the circumstances under which it happened and feels guilty that the consummation started with his anger and that he couldn’t stop himself when Meerab was swayed too. Meerab on the otherhand is overcome by immense guilt and mistrust of Murtasim - the guilt of having given herself to a man who she saw with another woman and having broken her own secret contract, something she vowed never to do. Feeling betrayed by her own emotions, the violent circumstances under which the consummation was initiated and being unable to comprehend her attraction to her husband, she leaves the house. Haya sees this and informs no one believing that Meerab has left forever.
Meerab wanders the streets only to be rescued by a kind man, Farukh, who takes her home to his uncle Khalid and aunt Ruqaiya. Meerab discovers that she is pregnant but refuses to return to Murtasim as she cannot face him and blames herself for the messing-up their relationship.
Mariam confesses her past to Naurez, who not only supports her but also tells her family off, promising to keep her away from their toxicity. Murtasim, heartbroken at how things happened between him and Meerab, searches for her everywhere, while continuing to believe that she went off with Rohail. Murtasim tells this to Waqas and his wife Aneela, so when Waqas searches for Meerab everywhere, he lands at Saba’s house, where he suffers a heart attack and dies. Aneela, now widowed, decides to move to America.
Meerab delivers a baby girl, Meesam, while Murtasim continues to search for her. Dejected, humbled, broken and losing all hope, Murtasim becomes a shadow of his former self. He continues to visit all the places he went to Meerab to re-live his time with her and try and discern why Meerab would leave him with no answers. With all this inner turmoil and constantly disturbed by thé thought of Meerab and Rohail together, two years after Meerab’s disappearance, Murtasim caves and agrees to marry Haya, much to the latter’s delight.
Meerab continues to ponder whether she did the right thing by keeping Murtasim away from his child. Saba, while searching for her, visits Murtasim and clears his misunderstandings about Rohail and Meerab. She explains that Meerab never had any feelings for Rohail and considered him nothing more than a friend. It was Rohail who was constantly intruding in Meerab’s life. She further clarifies that Rohail got married to his cousin and is based in Dubai so Meerab cannot be with him by any stretch of imagination. Realizing that Meerab left him on her own accord, Murtasim feels further humiliated and convinced that Meerab will never love him so he proceeds with his wedding preparation with Haya. In the meantime, Saba comes across Meerab and Meesam and urges Meerab to return to Murtasim.
Meerab arrives with Meesam on the day of Haya and Murtasim’s wedding. Unable to accept defeat, Haya insults Meerab and Meesam only to be shut down by Murtasim who is shocked at first but embraces his wife and daughter. Meerab also exposes the fact that Haya knew and saw why she left the house. Not wanting her to ruin her son’s marriage again, Maa Begum sends Haya to live in the village forever. Murtasim begs Meerab for forgiveness for having been violent and inconsiderate with her that night stating that she has humbled him. He tells her that he could not bear to change anything in their room and he even continued to sleep on the sofa to convince himself that she was still around. He professes his love for her again and begs Her not to leave him ever again. She reciprocates by wiping his tears and asking him in jest to never bother her and always listen to her. Murtasim remarks how their daughter is adorable and the proud parents admire their daughter from afar.
The show ends with Meerab starting her law studies to become a lawyer, with the blessings of Maa Begam and Murtasim’s support.
The last visuals are of Meerab and Murtasim romancing in the fields while looking forward to their lives together.
